How is the “Price of things” relevant to the Economy and Climate Change?
We are not paying full price for the products that we are using in terms of the $2.7 trillion of underpayment of labor in developing countries (to bring them to a decent working conditions and living wages), in terms of $468 billion of products that are produced by modern slavery (forced labor and child labor), in terms of the global impacts to indigenous communities that are affected by business operations (air, water, earth pollution). Not paying a full price encourages relentless consumption of fast fashion, fast food, fast replacement of frugal products (designed to be replaced every few years), fast deterioration of earth conditions and fast breaching of planetary boundaries beyond earth capacity. Business and Consumers are not aware of such costs and are not bearing the brunt. The more these costs are externalized to consumers and business the more the positive feedback loop of ever increasing consumption will continue to flourish.
